Introduction to GPS

It's amazing that research done by scientists and others years ago can be useful by those who come after them, in inventing once unheard of technology such as the navman GPS. Those scientists who invented the atomic clock to measure time so accurately - down to a billionth of a second - could not have known that their technology would then be used to save people by tracking and finding those who were lost or in trouble before they could die of thirst or get into some other strife.

And of course they could not know that their inventions would be put together with other marvels such as the launching of satellites to make the world's newest invention of the time, a Global Positioning System or GPS such as the navman. Satellites and atomic clocks - both are used by the navman GPS. The 24 satellites that have been launched into orbit by the US to provide a network of coverage were first intended only for military use.

However, they were soon released with modifications for the use of civilians. The modification made them slightly less accurate and so it was removed soon after, allowing everyone to pinpoint their position on the planet to within one metre, something unheard of only a few years ago.
