Alternatives to Air Conditioning

While some people need air conditioners there are many of us who could do without it. Using alternatives not only saves on running costs, but also helps to save the environment. And it is actually healthier for you if your body does not have to continually readjust to major temperature changes. So what are the alternatives?

When the summer temperature soars there are certain things you can do before switching on the air-conditioner. Firstly keep the blinds or rubber-backed curtains drawn on the sunny side of the house, but have the cool side windows open. Plant deciduous trees or shrubbery on the hottest side of the house - this will allow winter warmth in when their leaves fall.

Using fans is often the only extra thing you need to do to cool off. Some like ceiling fans only, but a mixture of fans is probably best. Others things you can do are to wear light-coloured, cotton clothing that is loose-fitting, and take your shoes and shirt off while indoors - at least when you are at home. Drink plenty of fluids, but restrict sweet and sugary drinks. Avoid caffeine, high-fat and large meals. Have your walls and roof painted a light colour to reflect heat and use laptops on a table. Insulate the ceiling and ventilate the attic. With all these alternatives in place the use of air-conditioners can be limited.
